Sydney Nightlife

Sydney NightlifeWhen it comes to drinking and having night time fun, Sydney is a really wild one as you will see once you engage in its lively night life. There is an enormous number of places to be seen and it is near impossible to see them all in just a few days. There are problems however as only some venues hold a license that grants them 24h work time, and most of those even close at some moment in the night, especially if they are near residential buildings. Also, wherever you go staff will be checking your ID as persons under 18 are not allowed to enter and buy alcohol. Visibly drunk people will never get inside any of the places so there is no point in even trying.

Some of the more popular places are very discriminating when granting entry so a group of men will hardly get inside without any women with them. Most of the places have some basic dressing code. In pubs men are expected to wear long pants, closed toe shoes and shirts with sleeves. In clubs you should have neat shoes (business style). Women are not so looked upon and they can dress more freely although there are some shoe rules too.

If you are going to a place with live music you can expect to pay a fare anywhere from $5 to $30 and you will never pay anything to get into a bar or a pub. At some places there is a lockdown at certain hour so if you go out you will not be able to go back in. This can be nasty if you go out for a cigarette (smoking is banned inside public places).

The night clubs in Sydney are very spread throughout the city so it would be good to have an idea where you want to go before you actually go somewhere out. Irish Pubs spread like a disease through Sydney and you will find tons of those in the Rocks district and in the southern parts of the city. Business pubs are a bit more trendy places where city lawyers, brokers and managers go on weekends to let themselves loose.

Gay scene is very strong here and you will find lots of clubs for that kind of fun in the east parts of the city. Sydney waiters don’t expect a tip and you will in most cases get your change back.
